Vulkollan® offers extreme abrasion resistance and high load capacity for demanding industrial applications. Find out more now.
Vulkollan is a cast polyurethane elastomer with very high mechanical load capacity. The material combines high restoring forces with excellent abrasion resistance and is suitable for permanently dynamic applications.
Typical of Vulkollan are high tensile and tear strength as well as very good long-term elasticity. As a result, the material remains dimensionally stable and functionally reliable even under changing loads. Compared with classic rubber compounds, Vulkollan shows a significantly longer service life.
Vulkollan is used above all where components must be simultaneously load-bearing, wear-resistant and elastic. Common applications are rollers, wheels, damping elements and highly stressed functional parts in mechanical engineering and plant construction. For technical classification in the material context, see Polyurethane elastomers.
Properties of Vulkollan
Vulkollan is characterised by a combination of high elasticity and very high mechanical load capacity. The material is suitable for applications with continuous alternating stress.
Mechanical properties
The material achieves a very high tensile and tear strength. At the same time, the restoring force remains stable even under long-term load. As a result, Vulkollan is suitable for components with high dynamic stress.
Abrasion and wear behaviour
Vulkollan offers pronounced abrasion resistance. In rolling, sliding or impact-loaded applications, this leads to a long service life and consistent function.
Elasticity and long-term behaviour
Long-term elasticity is retained even under repeated load. Deformations are reduced in a controlled manner, whereby dimensional accuracy and function remain assured in the long term.
Compared with other elastomers, Vulkollan occupies a special position in highly dynamic and wear-intensive applications.
Areas of application of Vulkollan
Vulkollan is used wherever components are exposed to high dynamic loads and at the same time a high wear resistance is required. The material is particularly suitable for industrial applications with continuous movement.
Mechanical engineering and plant construction
In mechanical engineering and plant construction, Vulkollan is frequently used for rollers, guides, stops and damping elements. The combination of elasticity and abrasion resistance ensures a long service life even at high cycle rates.
Conveyor and transport technology
In conveyor technology, Vulkollan is used for drive and deflection rollers. The material reduces wear and ensures uniform force transmission under changing loads.
Vibration and shock damping
For damping applications, Vulkollan offers controlled energy absorption. As a result, vibrations and shock loads can be reliably reduced without impairing dimensional stability.
Typical applications are found, among others, in mechanical engineering as well as in automated production and conveyor systems.
Vulkollan compared with rubber and other polyurethanes
Vulkollan differs both from classic rubber materials and from standard polyurethanes. The material is used specifically where conventional elastomers reach their load limits.
Comparison with classic rubber materials
Compared with rubber, Vulkollan offers significantly higher abrasion resistance and tensile strength. Under continuous dynamic load, mechanical stability is retained for longer, whereby service lives are significantly extended.
Comparison with standard polyurethanes
Compared with conventional polyurethane elastomers, Vulkollan is characterised by a very high consistency of material properties. This leads to reproducible results in components with high technical requirements.
Classification in the material spectrum
Vulkollan occupies a position between classic elastomers and high-load-bearing engineering plastics. As a result, the material is particularly suitable for applications in which elasticity and wear resistance are required equally.
A general overview of alternative elastomers supports material-related selection.
Shapes, hardnesses and production of Vulkollan
Vulkollan is produced as a cast polyurethane elastomer. The casting process enables precise adjustment of the material properties as well as the production of different geometries.
Shapes and geometries
The material is suitable for the production of rollers, wheels, bushes, buffers and shape-bound functional parts. Casting allows both simple and complex component geometries to be realised.
Hardness ranges
Vulkollan is available in various hardness grades. The choice of hardness grade influences elasticity, load-bearing capacity and damping behaviour. Harder versions are suitable for high loads, softer variants for damping applications.
Production and machining
After casting, Vulkollan components can be machined. Turning, milling and grinding enable tight dimensional tolerances for technically demanding applications.
For individual versions, a custom-made product to drawing or sample is advisable.
Resistances and application limits of Vulkollan
Vulkollan offers a high mechanical load capacity, but like every elastomer has defined application limits. A realistic classification of the resistances supports safe application.
Temperature range
The material is suitable for a broad application range at moderate to elevated temperatures. Continuous thermal overload influences elasticity and service life.
Chemical resistance
Vulkollan shows good resistance to many oils, greases and lubricants. On contact with aggressive media, a material-specific test is advisable.
Ageing and environmental influences
Under normal industrial conditions, the material structure remains stable over a long period. Continuous UV radiation, high temperatures or aggressive environments influence ageing behaviour.
For applications with special environmental requirements, a comparison with other elastomers is advisable.
