Description
Are you looking for extremely wear-resistant plastic semi-finished products for demanding industrial applications? A polyurethane rod (PUR D44) offers the perfect material solution when conventional rubber or standard plastics reach their mechanical limits. As a premium elastomer, PUR D44 combines the flexibility of rubber with the high load-bearing capacity of hard plastics.
To give your design the exact physical performance it needs, our PU rods are available in three perfectly graded hardness levels: 72 Shore A (soft), 80 Shore A (medium-hard) and 90 Shore A (hard).
Material properties: Why choose polyurethane rods of D44 quality?
The material polyurethane (PUR) grade D44 is produced by a precise polyaddition process. Since no by-products are split off in the process, the components react completely. The result is a homogeneous high-tech elastomer with an outstanding property profile:
-
Excellent abrasion resistance: Optimised wear values guarantee maximum service life and reduce maintenance cycles.
-
Outstanding recovery profile: The rods can be deformed reversibly and return to their original shape after mechanical unloading.
-
High resistance to media and weathering: Permanently resistant to mineral oils, greases, many solvents as well as ozone and UV radiation.
-
Effective noise reduction: High damping capacity provides noticeable sound and vibration protection in mechanical engineering.
-
Food-safe & safe: Free from plasticisers and fully approved for food contact in accordance with EU 10/2011 and FDA guidelines.
-
Special features: Hydrolysis-resistant, microbe-resistant, cold-flexible and equipped with a friction-reduced non-stick surface.
The Shore hardnesses compared: 72 Shore A, 80 Shore A or 90 Shore A?
The choice of the right Shore hardness specifically controls the elasticity, dimensional stability and load-bearing capacity of your component. Use our comparison table to find the optimum PUR rod for your project:
| Technical property | 72 Shore A (Soft) | 80 Shore A (Medium-hard) | 90 Shore A (Hard) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardness level | Soft | Medium-hard | Hard |
| Elasticity & elongation | Very high | High | Medium |
| Abrasion resistance | Good | Very good | Extremely high |
| Dimensional stability under load | Low | Good | Very high |
| Vibration damping | Excellent | Good | Medium |
| Mechanical load-bearing capacity | Medium | High | Maximum |
PUR rod 72 Shore A – Maximum elasticity & damping
The soft version has a very high deflection capacity. The material absorbs impacts excellently and is perfect for sensitive contact surfaces, soft seals or highly vibration-damping components.
PUR rod 80 Shore A – The universal industrial all-rounder
The medium-hard variant is the optimum compromise between flexibility and mechanical strength. This hardness is selected as standard for technical components that require both wear protection and a certain degree of elasticity.
PUR rod 90 Shore A – Maximum hardness for extreme loads
A PUR rod with 90 Shore A is one of the harder elastomers. It barely deforms even under extreme pressure and offers the highest cut resistance, abrasion resistance and dimensional stability in the entire range.
Typical areas of application for PU rods
Thanks to the broad hardness spectrum, polyurethane rods cover a virtually unlimited range of industrial sectors (e.g. automotive industry, concrete industry, conveyor technology, mechanical engineering):
-
Areas of application (72 Shore A): Shock absorbers, elastic buffers, soft seals, vibrating mats with high inherent dynamics.
-
Areas of application (80 Shore A): Technical rollers, stops, protective pads in vehicle and trailer construction.
-
Areas of application (90 Shore A): Highly loaded guide rollers, scrapers, plough strips & snow-clearing strips, wear-resistant linings in the concrete industry (e.g. for gravel and sand hoppers).
Technical profile & temperature resistance
Under normal ambient conditions (20∘C, 50% RH), the material can be stored almost indefinitely. The temperature range of PUR D44 is optimised for changing and harsh environmental conditions:
-
Continuous service temperature: approx. −30∘C to +80∘C. The material remains cold-flexible even in the sub-zero range (hardness increases slightly in severe cold).
-
Short-term temperature exposure: up to approx. +100∘C / +110∘C (under continuous heat, elasticity decreases and the material may become softer).
Design note: For continuous exposure to thermal limits or contact with aggressive chemical media, the material selection should be checked in advance for the specific application.
Available versions & delivery forms
-
Diameter range: Available from Ø 5 mm to Ø 150 mm.
-
Lengths & cut pieces: Standard length is 1,000 mm. Individual custom lengths, short cut pieces or special dimensions are available on request.
-
Colour as a quality feature: The standard colour for polyurethane D44 is brown (in visual contrast to standard PUR or Vulkollan®, which are usually supplied in "natural"). Special colours in black, white, red, blue, yellow and green (or according to the RAL register) are possible as custom-made products.
-
Machining & processing: PUR D44 rods can be machined extremely well with common tools (turning, milling) and cut to size precisely.
Frequently asked questions about polyurethane rods (PUR D44)
Which Shore hardness do I need for my application? That depends on the main load. If your component is to damp impacts or seal flexibly, 72 Shore A is ideal. For technical rollers, 80 Shore A is recommended. For components subject to extreme wear and high pressure (e.g. scrapers or plough strips), choose 90 Shore A.
Why are PUR D44 rods brown and not natural-coloured? The brown colouring is the characteristic identifying feature of the D44 quality compound. It serves to quickly distinguish it visually from standard polyurethanes or Vulkollan®, which are typically supplied in light yellow/natural.
Can PUR D44 rods be milled or turned? Yes. Polyurethane of grade D44 can be machined extremely well. Depending on the hardness level (particularly easy at 90 Shore A), the material can be precisely turned or milled into individual technical moulded parts on CNC machines using sharp tools.
Is the material approved for use in the food industry? Yes. All three hardness variants (72, 80 and 90 Shore A) of our PUR D44 material are plasticiser-free and fully meet the requirements of EU Regulation 10/2011 as well as the strict FDA approvals for direct contact with food.
