Original Vulkollan® D15 sheets: high-end polyurethane in 70, 82 & 90 Shore A Are you looking for extremely wear-resistant elastomer sheets for maximum…
Description
Are you looking for extremely wear-resistant elastomer sheets for maximum mechanical and dynamic loads? Sheets made from Original Vulkollan® D15 (manufactured on the basis of the high-tech formulation with Desmodur® 15 from Covestro) offer the absolute premium solution when standard plastics or conventional rubber fail.
As one of the most high-performance polyurethane elastomers (PUR) on the market, Vulkollan® combines outstanding physical properties with unsurpassed service life. To give your design the exact surface hardness and flexibility it needs, our Vulkollan® sheets and cut pieces are available in three perfectly graded hardness levels: 70 Shore A (soft), 80 Shore A (medium-hard) and 90 Shore A (hard).
Material properties: why choose Vulkollan® D15 elastomer sheets?
Original Vulkollan® D15 is manufactured in a precise polyaddition process. As no by-products are split off in the process, the components react with each other completely. The result is a homogeneous structure with outstanding performance values compared with standard rubber:
-
Absolute maximum abrasion resistance: Extremely low wear values guarantee significantly longer service lives than conventional PU sheets.
-
Minimal compression set: After heavy, prolonged compression, the sheets largely return to their original shape – no permanent "flat standing".
-
Outstanding resistance to media and weathering: Excellent resistance to mineral oils, greases, many solvents as well as ozone and UV radiation.
-
Highly effective noise reduction: Excellent vibration damping and sound insulation for heavily loaded system components.
-
Free from plasticisers: Fully approved for food contact in accordance with EU Regulation 10/2011 and FDA guidelines.
-
Special features: Hydrolysis-resistant, microbe-resistant, cold-flexible and equipped with a friction-reduced non-stick surface.
The Shore hardnesses compared: 70 Shore A, 82 Shore A or 90 Shore A?
The choice of the right Shore hardness specifically controls the elastic behaviour, damping and dimensional stability of your polyurethane sheets:
| Technical property | 70 Shore A (Soft) | 82 Shore A (Medium-hard) | 90 Shore A (Hard) |
| Hardness level | Soft | Medium-hard | Hard |
| Elasticity & elongation | Very high | High | Medium |
| Abrasion resistance | Good | Very good | Absolute maximum |
| Dimensional stability under load | Low / Flexible | Good | Very high |
| Vibration damping | Excellent | Good | Medium |
| Dynamic load capacity | Medium | High | Extremely high |
Vulkollan® sheets 70 Shore A – maximum elasticity & damping
The soft version has a very high deflection capacity. The material absorbs impacts optimally and is perfect for soft contact surfaces, flexible seals or highly vibration-damping pads.
Vulkollan® sheets 82 Shore A – the universal industrial all-rounder
The medium-hard sheet material forms the perfect compromise between flexibility and mechanical strength. This hardness is chosen as standard for technical applications where both wear protection and elasticity are required.
Vulkollan® sheets 90 Shore A – maximum hardness for extreme loads
A Vulkollan® rod or a sheet with 90 Shore A is among the hardest elastomers. It barely deforms even under extreme pressure and offers the highest cut resistance, abrasion resistance and dimensional stability.
Typical application examples for Vulkollan® sheet material
Thanks to the broad range of thicknesses and hardness levels, Original Vulkollan® D15 sheets cover an almost unlimited field of application:
-
Scraper bars & snow plough bars: Maximum service lives in municipal winter service (preferably 90 Shore A).
-
Vibration mats & vibration pads: Effective decoupling in road and rail construction (preferably 70 and 80 Shore A).
-
Wear protection & linings: Protection of hoppers, chutes and bins in the concrete, sand and gravel industry against hard abrasion.
-
Dampers & buffers: High-load-capacity stop buffers in mechanical engineering and heavy fixture construction.
-
Pads & linings: Protective mats in truck, car and trailer construction for load securing and surface protection.
Technical profile & temperature resistance
Under normal ambient conditions (20°C, 50% r.h.), the material can be stored indefinitely. The temperature range of Vulkollan® D15 (90 Shore A) is designed for extreme industrial conditions:
-
Continuous service temperature: approx. -30 °C to +80 °C. The material remains cold-flexible in the sub-zero range (hardness increases slightly in severe cold).
-
Short-term temperature load: up to approx. +100 °C / +110 °C (under continuous heat, elasticity decreases and the material may become softer).
Design note: Under continuous thermal limit loads or direct contact with aggressive chemical media, the material selection should be checked in advance on the basis of the specific load duration.

-
Available material thicknesses: Continuously available from 0.5 mm to 50 mm.
-
Hardness levels: Available as standard in 70°, 80° and 90° Shore A.
-
Colour as a mark of authenticity: The standard colour for Original Vulkollan® D15 is always "natural" (light yellow/honey-coloured). Under the influence of UV light and oxygen, the material characteristically darkens to dark brown or black. This visual change is specific to the material and does not affect the mechanical properties. Special colourings in black, white, red, blue, yellow and green (or to the RAL register) are possible as custom-made items on request.
-
Machining & cut to size: Vulkollan® sheets can be excellently cut, waterjet cut or machined with sharp tools (milled, drilled) for precisely fitting technical moulded parts.
FAQ: frequently asked questions about Original Vulkollan® D15 sheets
Which sheet thickness and hardness do I need for wear protection in the concrete industry?
For the hard abrasion caused by gravel, sand and cement, Vulkollan® sheets with 90 Shore A in thicknesses from 10 mm to 30 mm have proven highly effective. They provide the necessary impact and cut resistance against sharp-edged media.
Why do the natural-coloured Vulkollan® sheets turn dark brown over time?
The darkening is the primary certificate of authenticity for Vulkollan® based on Desmodur® 15. As soon as the material comes into contact with daylight (UV radiation) and oxygen, it discolours. This is a purely visual process – the outstanding mechanical strength and elasticity are retained 100%.
Are the Vulkollan® sheets approved for contact with food?
Yes. Our Original Vulkollan® D15 plastic sheets in the hardnesses 70, 80 and 90 Shore A are completely free from plasticisers and fully meet the strict requirements of EU Regulation 10/2011 as well as the FDA guidelines for direct contact with food.
Can the sheets be cut precisely to special sizes?
Yes. Vulkollan® can be machined excellently. Smaller thicknesses can be precisely cut or punched, while thicker sheets (up to 50 mm) can ideally be processed by waterjet cutting or machining (milling, drilling) into individual technical components.
