Description
PA 6 (Polyamide) Rods
PA 6 plastic (polyamide, or commonly known as nylon) is produced by manufacturers in standard semi-finished products for further processing in the form of PA6 sheet cut pieces, rods and hollow rods. Nylon plastics are often combined with numbers, including PA 6, PA 6.6, PA 12 and PA 46.
These numbers refer to the molecular structure of the nylon polymer. Each structure type also offers different properties. The most commonly used polyamide plastics are PA 6 plastic (extrusion), PA 6 cast and PA 6.6 (nylon 6.6). PA 6 (nylon) is generally a semi-crystalline thermoplastic with a low density and high thermal stability.
Due to their outstanding wear resistance, good coefficient of friction and very good temperature resistance and impact strength, polyamides are among the most important and most useful engineering thermoplastics. Nylon polyamide is also characterised by very good chemical resistance and is a particularly oil-resistant plastic.
Ideal as a metal replacement, including for automotive parts
Thanks to this excellent combination of properties, the PA polymer is ideal as a metal replacement, including for automotive parts, industrial valves, insulators for railway sleepers and other technical applications that require high strength, toughness and low weight.
Nylon tends to absorb water and therefore offers poorer dimensional stability than other engineering plastics. The properties of polyamides vary from hard and tough PA 6.6 through PA type 6 to soft and flexible PA 12. Depending on the type, polyamide plastics absorb different amounts of moisture. This in turn influences the properties of the nylon as well as the dimensional stability of the finished parts

Extrusion and casting
As already described, a distinction is made between nylon semi-finished products that are produced by extrusion and by casting. Extrusion is generally suitable for smaller parts with high production volumes, whereas casting is more suitable for large parts with fewer internal stresses and low quantities.
Extruded and cast polyamides can be modified with fillers to improve specific properties. In addition to PA natural and PA black, BW Kunststoffe e.K. offers various polyamide colours and modifications.

Applications
One of the most common applications of PA6 is the production of fibres and textiles. Due to its high melting point and its outstanding tensile strength, PA6 is particularly suitable for the production of hard-wearing fabrics. Nylon stockings are a perfect example of how PA6 is used in the fashion industry.
Another area in which PA6 is frequently used is the automotive industry. Due to its high abrasion resistance and its outstanding resistance to chemicals, oils and solvents, PA6 is used for the production of various components in vehicles. From engine mountings to hose lines, PA6 is an indispensable material in this industry.
The material also has numerous applications in mechanical engineering. It is often used for the production of gears, bearings and rollers.
PA6 is also widely used in the electrical industry, as it has good electrical insulation capability. In addition, PA6 is also used in the sports and leisure industry. Skis, snowboards, tennis rackets and bicycle frames are just a few examples of products for which PA6 is preferred due to its high impact strength and flexibility.
Technical data
In addition to its diverse applications, the plastic also has impressive technical data. It is resistant to embrittlement, has a high impact strength and offers good dimensional stability under heat. In addition, PA6 can also be modified with various additives and fillers to achieve specific properties such as flame retardancy or increased rigidity.
Overall, PA6 is an extremely versatile material with a broad range of applications. Its outstanding technical data make it a popular choice in various industries. From the automotive industry to the fashion industry - PA6 is a true all-rounder.
It will also continue to play an important role in the future and enrich our world with its diverse range of possible uses. The properties of polyamides vary from hard and tough PA 6.6 through PA type 6 to soft and flexible PA 12. Depending on the type, polyamide (PA 6) plastics absorb different amounts of moisture. This in turn influences the properties of the nylon as well as the dimensional stability of the finished parts.
