Description
A rod made of acrylic glass, also known as polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), is a thermoplastic material that stands out for its crystal-clear appearance, high resistance and versatility.
It is often used as a lightweight, shatter-resistant alternative to glass and, thanks to its excellent weather and UV resistance, is suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. Its excellent machining properties, such as cutting, milling and polishing, make it suitable for numerous industrial and decorative applications.
Properties
High transparency
Acrylic glass is known for its crystal-clear appearance. It offers a light transmission of up to 92%, surpassing many other transparent materials. This makes it ideal for decorative and functional applications where clear visibility or light transmission is required.
Mechanical strength
The material is more shatter-resistant than glass and has a high surface hardness. It withstands mechanical loads well, which makes it ideal for load-bearing and stressed constructions.
Weather and UV resistance
Acrylic glass is extremely weather-resistant and does not yellow even under prolonged UV radiation. This makes rods made of PMMA particularly suitable for outdoor use.
Low weight
PMMA is about 50% lighter than glass, which not only simplifies transport but also makes installation easier.
Chemical resistance
The material shows good resistance to many chemicals, including diluted acids and alkalis. However, organic solvents such as acetone should be avoided, as these can attack the material.
Versatile machining options
Acrylic glass rods can be easily cut, milled, drilled and polished. Bonding and thermoforming are also possible, which ensures high flexibility in use.
Applications
The versatility of acrylic glass is reflected in its wide range of possible uses:
Lighting technology
Thanks to their high light transmission, rods made of acrylic glass are often used for luminaires, light guides and decorative lighting elements.
Architecture and construction
In architecture, they are used as decorative elements or for transparent constructions such as railings, handrails or design objects.
Mechanical engineering
In mechanical engineering, rods made of PMMA are used for precision components, protective covers or viewing windows.
Advertising technology
Acrylic glass is a preferred material for signs, displays, exhibition stand construction and POS systems. The high-quality appearance and easy machining make it the ideal choice.
Model making and DIY projects
In model making, the material is used for transparent structures, ornaments and functional components. Thanks to its easy handling, it is also eminently suitable for DIY projects.
FAQ on rods made of acrylic glass
How do acrylic glass and polycarbonate differ?
Acrylic glass offers higher transparency and better UV resistance, while polycarbonate is more impact-resistant and withstands higher temperatures.
Are rods made of acrylic glass scratch-resistant?
Acrylic glass has a hard surface, but is not completely scratch-resistant. Protective coatings or care products can improve scratch resistance.
Is acrylic glass recyclable?
Yes, acrylic glass is thermoplastic and can be reused through recycling.
What lengths and diameters are available?
Rods made of acrylic glass are available in various lengths (usually 1 m to 2 m) and diameters (2 mm to 100 mm and more).
How can acrylic glass be cleaned?
Clean it with a soft cloth and mild soapy water to avoid scratches.
