The history behind Teflon
PTFE, the plastic behind the name Teflon, was discovered in 1938 by chance by the chemist Dr. Roy Plunkett, when he froze the plastic tetrafluoroethylene overnight. The next day, a white powder had settled and the history of polytetrafluoroethylene began. At the beginning, the plastic was hardly given any attention, as it was still very expensive to produce and manufacture.
In the Second World War, the plastic was used in the construction of the atomic bomb, as the plastic showed no reaction or change towards the uranium. So the plastic was used to encase the uranium.
Only years later, in 1954, Teflon was discovered by the French chemist Marc Grégoire or rather his wife to have new properties as well as a new use for the plastic. The chemist coated his fishing line with Teflon in order to be able to untangle it better and more easily. His wife coated her pots and pans with it. So that the food does not stick and burn.
In 1954, they received the patent to use Teflon as a non-stick coating for pots, pans, irons and baking moulds. In the kitchen, PTFE is indispensable. But Teflon is not only used for that. Over the years, the plastic PTFE has been further developed and researched.
Many people are familiar with Teflon. The term Teflon is a trade name of the company DuPont. Behind the name Teflon is the plastic polytetrafluoroethylene, also known as PTFE.
PTFE is a linear semi-crystalline polymer, which can be produced from fluorine and carbon. PTFE belongs to the group of thermoplastics. Thermoplastics include all plastics that withstand high temperatures at their place of use.
Teflon cut pieces can be used in a temperature range from - 200 °C to + 260 °C. For short periods, it can also be used in a temperature range of + 300 °C. Its own melting temperature is + 327 °C. After exceeding the melting temperature, PTFE becomes glass-like transparent and decomposes.
Teflon cut pieces are used in the following industries:
- Food industry
- Aerospace
- General mechanical engineering
- Vehicle construction
- Medical technology
- Toy industry
- Packaging industry
- Beverage manufacturers
- Textile industry
- Conveyor systems
- Chemical industry
There they can be found, among others, in these application areas:
- Pump impellers
- Roller coverings
- Sealing material
- Prostheses
- Implants
- Plain bearings
- Fittings
- Linings for containers
- Valves
- Cutting mat
- Spectacle lenses
- Strings, among others from a guitar
Polytetrafluoroethylene impresses with its special and diverse properties.
- scratch-resistant
- dirt-repellent
- temperature-resistant
- non-flammable
- low coefficient of friction
- chemically inert
- stability
- slidable
- water-repellent
- durable
- resistant to chemical agents, oils and greases
Due to its versatility, Teflon cuts are used today in many different industries and application areas. Teflon is one of the best-known brands today and is also used in fabrics and textiles. Under the name Gore-Tex. The fabric is therefore weather-resistant and water-repellent. As well as wind-repellent and dirt-repellent.
The plastic PTFE is now indispensable. Some shy away from the prices of Teflon. But in the long run, it pays off if you choose the plastic PTFE. It is somewhat more expensive to purchase than some other plastics. But PTFE impresses with its properties as well as its durability. It withstands wind and weather and is still in impeccable condition after years and continues to withstand. It can be used very well for insulation.
In industry, the plastic PTFE is the most widely used plastic. It impresses with its technical properties. Regardless of whether it has to be used for heavily stressed components or sensitive processes. PTFE manages this without problems.
You can obtain Teflon cut pieces as sheets, rods, panels, hollow rods and films. Just as you and your company need the cut pieces for further processing. The semi-finished products can be milled, sawn, planed, drilled or turned with simple tools. No special tools are required for further processing as in production.
The term semi-finished products refers to all raw materials that only form a finished product together with other semi-finished products.
