Plastics for drones & UAVs – lightweight materials for unmanned systems
Lightweight, vibration-resistant and temperature-resistant plastics for drones and UAVs. Overview of suitable materials and optical covers made from PC and PMMA.
Lightweight, vibration-resistant and temperature-resistant plastics shape the development of modern drones and UAVs. They enable robust structures, precise optical covers and efficient lightweight constructions that meet the high demands of unmanned systems.
Why plastics play a central role in UAV construction
Unmanned systems must be light, energy-efficient and reliable. Plastics offer ideal conditions for this: low density, high stability, freedom from corrosion and free form design. With modern manufacturing processes, components can be produced quickly, precisely and cost-effectively, even in small series.
Requirements for plastics in drones and UAVs
Plastics for drones must withstand intense vibrations without deforming or tearing. At the same time, temperature changes, UV radiation and moisture must be taken into account. The optical quality of certain components – in particular protective covers for cameras or sensors – also plays an important role. Constant dimensional stability in flight is crucial for system precision.
Lightweight structural and functional materials for UAVs
Polycarbonate – impact-resistant, vibration-resistant and ideal for optical covers
Polycarbonate combines high impact resistance, transparency and vibration resistance. These properties make it the preferred material for sensor windows, camera protection, lightweight structural parts or propeller guard rings. Due to its robustness, it remains reliable even under continuous mechanical load. More about the material: Polycarbonate.
Acrylic glass (PMMA) – optimum optical quality at low weight
Acrylic glass (PMMA) offers excellent optical clarity and a very low weight. It is frequently used for camera domes, transparent housings or covers where a high-quality image or sensor signal is required. PMMA is UV-stable, but less impact-resistant than polycarbonate. Details can be found under Acrylic glass.
Polyamide, POM and other engineering plastics as functional materials
Polyamide (PA6/PA66) and POM are suitable for demanding mechanical components, such as housing modules, fastening elements or moving components. They are light, tough, wear-resistant and insensitive to vibration loads. High-temperature materials such as PEI or PPSU are used in particularly demanding environments.
Optical covers for cameras, sensors and LIDAR
UAVs require clear and durable covers for cameras, infrared sensors or LIDAR systems. Polycarbonate offers high impact resistance and good transparency for this, while PMMA delivers the best possible optical quality. The choice depends on the priority between image quality and mechanical load capacity. Temperature changes and UV exposure are already taken into account in the material selection.
Manufacturing of UAV components from plastic
Laser cutting for precise, lightweight structural components
Laser cutting enables filigree and lightweight components with high dimensional accuracy. UAV frames, cover plates, sensor holders or propeller guard structures can be manufactured quickly and cost-effectively. More on this: Laser cutting.
Industrial 3D printing for prototypes and functional components
Industrial 3D printing offers maximum flexibility for complex geometries and fast development cycles. Functional housings, aerodynamic elements and customised components benefit from high stability and low weight. Further information: Industrial 3D printing.
Example applications in drones & unmanned systems
| UAV component | Requirements | Suitable plastics |
|---|---|---|
| Sensor covers | Clarity, impact resistance | Polycarbonate, PMMA |
| Housing modules | Vibration resistance, temperature resistance | PA, POM, PC |
| Load-bearing structural parts | Rigidity, weight | PA, carbon-PC blends |
| Propeller guard rings | Robustness, low weight | Polycarbonate |
| Electronic modules | Insulation, dimensional stability | POM, PEI |
The table illustrates that different properties are prioritised depending on the area of application. The right material choice influences stability, durability and flight efficiency.
Plastics dominate the lightweight construction of modern UAVs
Plastics enable robust, light and precise components for drones and UAVs. With their combination of vibration resistance, optical quality, temperature resistance and design freedom, they are ideal for unmanned systems. New polymer blends and optimised manufacturing processes reinforce this trend and help to further increase the performance of future UAV generations.
