Graphite gaskets are among the proven solutions in the industrial sealing sector when high temperatures, pressure loads and chemically demanding media coincide. They are used wherever classic gasket materials such as elastomers or fibre materials reach their technical limits.
Typical areas of application are found in power generation, the chemical industry, in plant engineering as well as in pipework systems subject to high thermal loads. The following overview explains the structure, properties, designs and areas of application of graphite gaskets and supports the technical classification for industrial applications.
What are graphite gaskets?
Graphite gaskets are industrial flat gaskets made from expanded graphite. The starting material is natural graphite, which is thermally expanded by a special expansion process. This produces flexible graphite layers with high purity and excellent sealing properties.
The expanded graphite is then processed into sheets or laminates and can be combined with metallic inserts depending on the application. This material structure leads to very good adaptability to sealing surfaces and enables reliable sealing even with uneven flange surfaces.
Graphite has a layered crystal structure, which is responsible for its special properties. Under pressure, the individual layers shift against one another and compensate for unevenness in the sealing surfaces. This creates uniform surface pressure and a very low leakage rate.
Graphite gaskets are particularly suitable for applications with high temperatures, strong pressure fluctuations, chemically aggressive media and frequent temperature changes. Depending on the design, they are used as pure graphite gaskets, as variants with metallic reinforcement or as multi-layer gasket systems that offer additional mechanical stability.
Material structure and construction
The material graphite has a lamellar microstructure in which carbon layers are arranged parallel to one another. This special structure gives the material both flexibility and stability. At the same time, it provides good compressibility and low permeability to many media. In addition, graphite has a very high temperature resistance, which makes it particularly suitable for thermally demanding applications.
During the manufacturing process, natural graphite is first chemically treated and then strongly expanded by thermal expansion. This significantly increases the volume of the material. The expanded graphite is then compacted into graphite foils or graphite sheets, which serve as the starting material for industrial gaskets.
In many applications, metallic reinforcements are also integrated. Typical examples are inserts made of stainless steel, metal expanded mesh or perforated metal sheets. These metallic carriers increase the mechanical stability of the gasket and at the same time facilitate handling during installation and operation.
Properties of graphite gaskets
Graphite gaskets are characterised by a combination of thermal resistance, chemical resistance and high adaptability. This makes them particularly suitable for demanding industrial applications.
Key properties at a glance:
- High temperature resistance – depending on the design up to over 450 °C in an oxidising environment and considerably higher in inert media
- Very good chemical resistance to many acids, alkalis and solvents
- Very good adaptability to flange surfaces
- Low leakage rates with a correctly designed flange connection
- Ageing resistance even under long-term thermal load
- Good compressibility and resilience
These properties enable reliable sealing even under demanding operating conditions and long maintenance intervals.
Temperature and pressure ranges
Graphite gaskets are used primarily in applications in which high temperatures occur. The exact range of application depends on several factors, including:
- purity of the graphite
- existing metallic reinforcement
- operating atmosphere
- surface pressure of the connection
Typical temperature ranges:
| Operating environment | Temperature range |
|---|---|
| Oxidising atmosphere | up to approx. 450 °C |
| Steam or inert | up to approx. 650 °C |
| Inert high-temperature applications | in some cases over 1000 °C |
Graphite gaskets can also be used reliably at high pressure levels, provided the flange system, bolt load and gasket design are designed accordingly.
Areas of application of graphite gaskets
Graphite gaskets are used wherever high thermal, chemical or mechanical loads occur and a permanently stable seal is required.
Chemical industry and process engineering
In chemical plants, pipelines, reactors and apparatus frequently have to seal aggressive media safely. Graphite gaskets offer high chemical resistance here and remain stable even at high temperatures.
Power plant and energy technology
In steam lines, boiler systems and turbines, high temperatures and pressure loads prevail. Graphite gaskets ensure a permanently reliable seal of the flange connections here.
Petrochemicals and refineries
Oil- and gas-carrying systems place high demands on gasket materials. Graphite gaskets offer a safe seal here even under demanding operating conditions.
Mechanical and plant engineering
Graphite gaskets are also used in classic mechanical engineering, for example in flange connections with changing temperature and load cycles.
Superheated steam and high-pressure applications
For sealing points subject to high thermal loads with high pressure levels, graphite gaskets offer a long-lasting and reliable solution.
Designs and variants
Graphite gaskets are available in various designs in order to meet the different technical requirements.
Pure graphite flat gaskets
These gaskets consist entirely of expanded graphite. They offer very high flexibility and adapt optimally to the sealing surfaces.
Graphite gaskets with metallic reinforcement
For higher mechanical loads, graphite layers are combined with metallic inserts. Frequently used materials are stainless steel or other corrosion-resistant metals.
The reinforcement increases:
- the mechanical stability
- the ease of installation
- the safety with large nominal diameters
Graphite ring gaskets
Ring-shaped graphite gaskets are used specifically for standardised flange systems and are matched to common standards.
Custom-made products
For special applications, graphite gaskets can be manufactured to individual specifications. The following can be:
- inside and outside diameters
- material thicknesses
- hole patterns
- reinforcements
precisely adapted to the respective requirements.
Advantages over other gasket materials
Compared with many classic gasket materials, graphite gaskets offer several technical advantages.
At high temperatures, they retain their properties considerably longer than elastomer-based gaskets. At the same time, they are less susceptible to ageing processes or material embrittlement.
Graphite gaskets also show high resistance to chemically demanding media. This makes them particularly suitable for applications in which aggressive media or strong temperature changes occur.
A further advantage lies in the good adaptability to flange surfaces, whereby a reliable seal can be achieved even at moderate surface pressure.
Selecting the right graphite gasket
For a permanently reliable seal, the correct design of the gasket is decisive. Several technical factors must be taken into account when selecting. These include in particular the operating temperature and the pressure range of the plant as well as the chemical properties of the medium to be sealed. The geometry of the flange, the surface condition of the sealing surfaces and the required mechanical stability of the connection also play an important role.
Only the interaction of these parameters enables a technically suitable selection of the gasket. Careful design helps to reduce leakage risks, extend maintenance intervals and significantly increase the service life of the entire flange connection.
Installation and handling
Even with high-quality gasket materials, professional installation plays a central role for operational safety.
With graphite gaskets, the following points in particular should be observed:
- uniform tightening torques of the bolts
- clean and undamaged sealing surfaces
- correct surface pressure
- avoidance of mechanical damage during installation
Proper installation allows the performance of the gasket to be used optimally and ensures a permanently stable seal.
Graphite gaskets made to measure
In many industrial applications, standard dimensions and standardised gaskets from the catalogue are not sufficient to ensure a permanently reliable seal. Made-to-measure graphite gaskets offer a flexible solution here, as they can be adapted exactly to existing flange geometries, installation space specifications and operational requirements.
Manufacturing is generally based on technical drawings, CAD data or samples. This allows diameters, material thicknesses, hole patterns and possible reinforcements to be precisely defined and adapted to the respective application.
Particularly in older industrial plants, special flanges or individual machine constructions, made-to-measure graphite gaskets enable a precisely fitting seal. At the same time, installation times can be reduced and the risk of leaks significantly minimised, resulting in a long-term reliable and economical solution.
In conclusion
Graphite gaskets represent a proven solution for industrial applications in which high temperatures, pressure loads and chemically demanding media must be reliably controlled. Thanks to their special material structure, they adapt very well to sealing surfaces and ensure a stable seal even under changing operating conditions.
Thanks to different designs, optional metallic reinforcements and the possibility of custom manufacturing, graphite gaskets can be flexibly adapted to almost any application. They are suitable both for standardised flange connections and for complex special constructions in mechanical and plant engineering.
Professional selection taking into account temperature, pressure, medium and flange geometry forms the basis for safe and economical plant operation. Graphite gaskets thus make an important contribution to operational safety as well as to the reduction of maintenance and downtime costs.
