Balcony cladding and privacy screen made of plastic
Read here about the options you have with plastic as a privacy screen or as balcony cladding.
A balcony cladding or privacy screen made of plastic offers numerous advantages and design options.
Whether as protection from prying eyes, as a windbreak or simply as a decorative element – plastic sheets are a durable, versatile and low-maintenance choice for balconies.
In this article you will learn everything about the available materials, their advantages and possible applications.
Why choose plastic for balcony cladding?
Plastic sheets are the ideal choice for balcony cladding, as they:
- Are weather-resistant and durable.
- Are easy to clean and maintain.
- Are available in a wide variety of colours, patterns and surface textures.
- Can be cut to size individually.
In addition, plastic sheets offer great flexibility: they can be designed as a transparent, opaque or translucent privacy screen and blend harmoniously into any design concept.
Added benefits of plastic balcony cladding
Besides practical aspects such as protection and durability, plastic sheets increase the aesthetic value of your balcony. Thanks to innovative designs, you can play with colours, textures and transparency effects to design the outdoor area as you wish.
Common alternatives to plastic cladding
Besides plastic sheets, there are other cladding materials that are frequently used:
- Reed mats: An inexpensive solution, but one that is not very durable and is quickly damaged by the weather.
- Fabric coverings: Available in numerous colours and designs, but susceptible to wind and moisture.
- Wood cladding: Aesthetically appealing, but high-maintenance (regular painting or staining required).
By comparison, plastic sheets are easier to maintain, more durable and more versatile in use.
Versatile applications of plastic balcony cladding
Plastic balcony cladding fulfils various functions, including:
- Privacy screen: Protect your privacy from prying eyes and create a sheltered retreat.
- Windbreak: Enjoy wind-protected hours on your balcony and improve comfort in any weather.
- Aesthetic enhancement: Give your balcony a modern or individual design and increase the visual value of your property.
Plastic sheets are suitable both for private balconies and for commercial applications, for example in hotels, restaurants or office buildings. They are also an excellent choice for renovation projects, as they can be easily adapted to existing structures.
Types of plastic balcony cladding
1. Polycarbonate sheets (buy polycarbonate sheets)
Polycarbonate is a shatter-proof and UV-resistant alternative to glass. It is ideal for transparent or slightly tinted balcony cladding. The sheets are flexible and can even be used for curved balconies. However, the disadvantages include greater susceptibility to scratching compared with acrylic glass.
Advantages of polycarbonate:
- Shatter-proof and virtually indestructible
- High light transmission
- UV- and weather-resistant
- Versatile in use, including for curved constructions
2. Acrylic glass sheets (buy acrylic glass sheets)
Acrylic glass offers excellent light transmission and is more scratch-resistant than polycarbonate. It is available in a transparent or opal (frosted-glass-like) finish and provides an elegant look. However, acrylic glass is less shatter-proof than polycarbonate.
Advantages of acrylic glass:
- Extremely scratch-resistant
- Elegant look with high light transmission
- UV- and weather-resistant
3. HPL sheets (buy HPL sheets)
HPL (high-pressure laminate) is an extremely hard-wearing material. These sheets are opaque, impervious to light and available in many colours and patterns. They are scratch-resistant, weather-resistant and particularly suitable for commercial applications.
Advantages of HPL:
- High durability and scratch resistance
- Weather- and chemical-resistant
- Great variety of colours and designs
4. Aluminium composite sheets (buy aluminium composite sheets)
Aluminium composite sheets consist of a polyethylene core surrounded by two aluminium cover layers. These sheets are light, stable and available in various colours and designs (e.g. stainless steel look). They offer high rigidity and are completely opaque.
Advantages of aluminium composite sheets:
- Robust and durable construction
- Wide selection of colours and surface textures
- Easy to clean and low-maintenance
5. PVC sheets (buy PVC sheets)
PVC sheets are the most cost-effective option. They are light, stable and available in a white, light-impermeable finish. PVC offers good privacy protection, but is more susceptible to scratches than other materials.
Advantages of PVC:
- Inexpensive and versatile
- Easy to install
- Durable under moderate load
Step-by-step instructions: installing plastic sheets
- Measuring: Measure the required size for your balcony cladding.
- Cutting sheets to size: Order the sheets cut to size or cut them yourself with suitable tools (e.g. circular saw).
- Attaching fastening devices: Use corrosion-resistant brackets or screws.
- Fixing the sheets: Secure the sheets safely and ensure even spacing.
- Smoothing edges: Treat sharp edges with sandpaper to avoid injuries.
Care and maintenance tips
- Cleaning: Use a soft cloth and mild soapy water to remove dirt. Avoid abrasive cleaning agents.
- Regular inspection: Check the fastenings and surfaces regularly for damage or wear.
- Protection against scratches: For sensitive materials such as polycarbonate, special protective films can be applied.
Sustainability of plastic sheets
Many plastic sheets, especially those made of polycarbonate or acrylic glass, are recyclable. Thanks to their long service life, they help to reduce waste and are a more sustainable choice compared with short-lived alternatives such as fabric or reed mats.
Sustainable advantages:
- Reduced maintenance effort minimises long-term costs.
- Durability reduces the need for materials over the years.
- Recyclability ensures environmentally friendly disposal.
Extended applications
Besides balconies, plastic sheets can also be used for the following applications:
- Terrace cladding
- Privacy walls in the garden
- Roofing and carports
- Wind protection for open areas
Thanks to their versatility, plastic sheets are an investment that pays off in many areas.
