EN AW-6082 aluminium: high strength, good machinability, ideal for mechanical engineering & vehicle construction. Get precisely fitting aluminium sheets now!
EN AW-6082 is one of the most frequently used high-strength aluminium alloys in industrial environments. Thanks to its excellent combination of strength, corrosion resistance and very good machinability, it is particularly suitable for mechanically stressed components in mechanical engineering and vehicle construction. The material belongs to the group of heat-treatable AlMgSi alloys and is available in various tempers, although the T6 variant is the most common.
What is EN AW-6082?
Composition and material group
The designation EN AW-6082 describes a standardised aluminium alloy according to EN 573 and EN 485. It belongs to the AlMgSi1 material group and is based on a heat-treatable alloy of the aluminium-magnesium-silicon system. The heat-treatable property means that the mechanical characteristic values can be increased considerably by targeted heat treatment. As a result, various tempers such as T4, T5 or T6 can be achieved, each of which exhibits different strength and deformation values.
Typical alloying elements are:
- Magnesium (approx. 0.6–1.2 %) – increases strength and contributes to precipitation hardening
- Silicon (approx. 0.7–1.3 %) – improves castability and supports heat treatment
- Manganese (approx. 0.4–1.0 %) – improves strength through grain refinement and supports forming behaviour
In combination, these elements produce an alloy that offers a balanced ratio of strength, machinability, corrosion behaviour and weldability. Compared with purer aluminium materials, EN AW-6082 is significantly more capable, yet remains economical to process.
The microstructure of this alloy can be adjusted by targeted thermal treatments so that specific requirements in practice can be met precisely – for example, high load-bearing capacity combined with good formability in vehicle and mechanical engineering.
Standards and designations

Technical properties of EN AW-6082
EN AW-6082 offers a balanced combination of mechanical strength, good machinability and excellent corrosion resistance. These characteristics make the material particularly versatile. Typical is its use in components with high static and dynamic loads. In the T6 temper, the alloy achieves a very good strength-to-weight ratio, which makes it particularly interesting for lightweight construction projects.
In addition, EN AW-6082 has a high resistance to weathering and is therefore also suitable for applications outdoors and in corrosive environments. The alloy exhibits a stable structure, which has a positive effect on vibration behaviour and dimensional stability. Due to the fine-grained microstructure in the hardened temper, anodising (eloxal) is also very feasible – both functionally and decoratively.
A further advantage is the consistently high quality in industrial production: EN AW-6082 can be sawn, milled, drilled, turned or ground excellently. The material is therefore ideally suited for precisely machined parts, assemblies or housings with tight tolerances. These properties are particularly in demand in mechanical engineering and fixture construction.
Compared with softer alloys such as EN AW-6060, 6082 achieves a significantly higher yield strength without having to accept any notable losses in machinability.

Areas of application of EN AW-6082
This aluminium alloy is used in particular where high strength combined with good machinability is required.
Mechanical engineering
In mechanical engineering, EN AW-6082 is suitable for support profiles, frames, brackets, milled parts, housings and machine covers. The very good machinability allows complex geometries to be produced cost-effectively.
Vehicle construction
Vehicle construction benefits from the low weight and high strength. The material is used, for example, in:
- chassis
- trailer components
- wheel suspensions
- reinforcement profiles
Plant and apparatus engineering
Here, good corrosion resistance plays an important role. Applications are found in:
- platform systems
- brackets and crossbeams
- fixtures and brackets
Further fields of application
- rail vehicle construction
- stage and event technology
- aviation (secondary components only)
Processing and machining
Welding
EN AW-6082 can be welded well using the common processes such as TIG and MIG. After welding, however, post-treatment may be advisable, as the strength in the weld area is reduced.
Machining
The alloy is excellently machinable, especially in the T6 temper. Drilling, milling and turning are possible with standard tools.
Forming
- Bending is possible, but easier in the softer T4 temper.
- Rather unsuitable for deep drawing.
Surface treatment
- Well suited for anodising (technical or decorative)
- Powder coating is also possible
EN AW-6082 compared with other aluminium alloys
| Alloy | Strength | Weldability | Corrosion | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EN AW-6082 | high | good | very good | medium |
| EN AW-6060 | low | very good | good | inexpensive |
| EN AW-7075 | very high | poor | medium | expensive |
EN AW-6082 offers a very good price-performance ratio for load-bearing applications and sits in its balance between 6060 (soft, inexpensive) and 7075 (very strong, difficult to machine).
