Polymethyl methacrylate
Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is a high-quality, transparent plastic that stands out for its excellent optical properties. This plastic has an exceptionally high rigidity, which means that it barely deforms under load and retains its dimensional stability. This makes it ideal for applications where high structural integrity is required.
A further advantage of PMMA is its outstanding weather resistance. It withstands the effects of sun, rain and other environmental factors better than many other plastics, which increases its durability and possible uses outdoors.
However, PMMA also has some disadvantages. It has a relatively low toughness, which means that it can break easily under mechanical stress, such as impacts or knocks. This impact sensitivity limits its possible applications in areas where high mechanical loads are to be expected. In addition, PMMA is prone to stress cracking, that is, it can develop cracks under load or through contact with certain chemicals.
