Description
Polycarbonate sheets: Transparent, robust and versatile
Polycarbonate (PC) is a transparent, high-performance thermoplastic material that stands out for its high impact resistance and excellent transparency.
Polycarbonate sheets are characterised by a combination of optical clarity and mechanical robustness, making them ideal for a wide range of technical and industrial applications. The sheets are resistant to mechanical impact and offer excellent temperature resistance.
Thanks to their exceptional impact resistance, polycarbonate sheets offer significantly greater protection than conventional glass, yet are considerably lighter at the same time.
These special properties make polycarbonate an excellent choice for applications where both safety and optical clarity are required, such as protective glazing or safety barriers.
Processing and benefits of polycarbonate sheets
Machining of polycarbonate sheets
Polycarbonate sheets can be machined using common methods such as sawing, milling, drilling and thermoforming. The use of sharp tools is recommended in order to achieve clean cut edges and precise results. Thanks to their high heat resistance, polycarbonate sheets can also be formed using thermoforming processes to realise complex geometries. In addition, polycarbonate bonds well and can be easily joined for larger constructions.
Polycarbonate is weather-resistant and UV-stable, which makes it particularly suitable for outdoor applications. However, for long-term use under direct sunlight, a special UV-protective coating should be considered in order to prevent yellowing.
Properties
- High impact resistance: Polycarbonate sheets are virtually unbreakable and offer significantly higher impact strength than glass, which makes them particularly safe for protection-related applications.
- Transparency: With a light transmission of up to 90%, polycarbonate offers a clear and brilliant appearance that is barely distinguishable from conventional glass.
- High heat resistance: Even at high temperatures, polycarbonate remains dimensionally stable and resistant to thermal loads.
- Good chemical resistance: The plastic is resistant to many chemical substances and is therefore also suitable for industrial applications.
- Weather and UV resistance: Polycarbonate is resistant to various weather influences and can be used both indoors and outdoors.
Applications
Protective glazing and safety barriers
Due to their high impact resistance, polycarbonate sheets are ideal for protective glazing, safety barriers and machine guards. The sheets provide safety in sensitive areas where broken glazing could pose hazards.
Construction and architecture
In construction and architecture, polycarbonate sheets are used as roof glazing, partition walls and façade cladding. They offer an attractive combination of protection, optical clarity and low weight.
Mechanical engineering and industry
Polycarbonate is frequently used as protective covering in production facilities and machinery, as it ensures high safety through impact strength while at the same time offering good visibility of the processes.
Lighting industry
Thanks to their high light transmission, polycarbonate sheets are ideal as lamp covers and diffuser discs for various lighting applications, both indoors and outdoors.
Benefits of polycarbonate sheets
- High safety: The high impact strength ensures maximum protection, even under heavy mechanical load.
- Low weight: Polycarbonate is significantly lighter than glass, which allows for easy handling and installation.
- Weather-resistant: Ideal for outdoor applications, as polycarbonate is resistant to weather influences.
- Versatile machining: Polycarbonate can be sawed, drilled, milled and thermoformed, which allows flexible adaptation to the respective requirements.
Make use of the outstanding properties of our polycarbonate sheets for your projects and benefit from a material that impresses both with its robustness and with its transparent elegance. Our polycarbonate sheets offer the necessary performance and safety to meet your requirements, whether in construction, industry or architecture.
