Polybutylene terephthalate
Polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) is a thermoplastic material with properties similar to those of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). However, thanks to its more favourable cooling behaviour, PBT is particularly well suited to injection moulding. This property makes PBT a preferred choice in the manufacture of precision-engineered components in equipment construction.
PBT represents an alternative option to polyacetal (POM) and offers several advantages:
- Dimensional stability: PBT is characterised by very high dimensional stability, which is even significantly better than that of POM. This means that components made from PBT retain their shape and size precisely even under changing environmental conditions and loads.
- Sliding resistance: PBT has low sliding resistance, which makes it particularly suitable for applications involving moving parts. The low sliding resistance helps to minimise wear and friction between components.
- Strength and rigidity: PBT has high strength and rigidity, although these properties are somewhat lower compared with POM. Despite this minor drawback, PBT remains a robust and reliable material choice in many applications.
- Abrasion resistance: Another outstanding feature of PBT is its high abrasion resistance. This property ensures that PBT components have a long service life even under intensive use and load.
