Everything about aluminium AlMgSi1: technical data, areas of application, comparison with other alloys & processing tips.
Aluminium EN AW-6082, also known under the material designation AlMgSi1, is one of the most widely used wrought alloys from the 6000 series. Due to its mechanical strength, corrosion resistance and excellent machinability, this material is an industrial all-rounder. Particularly in the T6 condition, EN AW-6082 combines high strength with very good machining properties and is suitable for a wide range of applications in mechanical engineering, vehicle construction and plant engineering.
In addition to its technical performance, EN AW-6082 also impresses with ecological advantages. As a lead-free aluminium alloy, it meets important environmental standards and can be recycled without difficulty, which also makes it a future-proof choice from a sustainability perspective.
Technical properties of EN AW-6082
The alloy contains mainly aluminium, magnesium and silicon. Targeted heat treatment influences the microstructure in such a way that high mechanical values are achieved – without losing the good processing properties.
| Property | Value (T6 condition) |
|---|---|
| Tensile strength Rm | 290–320 MPa |
| Yield strength Rp0.2 | approx. 240 MPa |
| Elongation at break A | approx. 10 % |
| Density | 2.70 g/cm³ |
| Modulus of elasticity | 70,000 MPa |
| Hardness (Brinell) | ~ 95 HB |
These properties make EN AW-6082 a preferred alloy for load-bearing components with a high load profile and at the same time low weight. Even under fatigue loading, the material shows good fatigue behaviour.
Advantages in design and manufacturing
EN AW-6082 is regarded as a particularly economical alloy, as it is not only readily available but also permits a wide range of machining techniques. The good machinability, weldability as well as decorative and functional anodising ability make it the ideal choice for precise, functional and durable constructions. It also impresses with high corrosion resistance – even in the untreated condition.
Designers also benefit from the high dimensional accuracy in CNC machining. Even thin-walled components can be reliably manufactured with this alloy without stress cracks or deformation occurring. In series production, the repeatability is high – an important factor in industrial quality assurance.
Typical areas of application of AlMgSi1 (EN AW-6082)
The possible applications of the alloy range from standardised profiles to highly specific milled parts. Particularly in the CNC machining of aluminium cut pieces, the alloy is a standard material – even with thin wall thicknesses or complex geometries.
Common areas of application:
- Mechanical engineering (beams, fixtures, fastening elements)
- Vehicle technology (frame parts, support arms, structural components)
- Construction industry (façade elements, railings, window profiles)
In addition, EN AW-6082 is also used in medical technology, in the packaging industry and in modular assembly systems – wherever corrosion-resistant, lightweight and mechanically stable components are required.
Material comparison: EN AW-6082 vs. other aluminium alloys
EN AW-6082 vs. EN AW-6060 6082 offers higher strength, but is less easy to form. 6060 is better suited for extruded profiles with complex geometry, particularly for decorative applications with high optical requirements.
EN AW-6082 vs. 7075 (AlZnMgCu1.5) 7075 offers extremely high strength, but is not corrosion-resistant and only weldable to a limited extent. 6082 is the better choice for weldable, durable constructions with high requirements for weather resistance and durability.
EN AW-6082 vs. 2011 (AlCuBiPb) 2011 is extremely easy to machine, but problematic for the environment and recycling due to its high lead content. 6082 is lead-free and meets current environmental standards, while also being easy to machine. It is also better suited for components with a load-bearing function.
Processing: milling, welding, anodising
Machining: In the T6 condition, EN AW-6082 impresses with very good milling and turning properties. For optimum surface finishes, the use of sharp carbide tools, controlled feed and sufficient cooling is recommended. The material also proves accommodating and reliable when drilling, sawing and thread cutting.
Welding: The material can be well joined with TIG or MIG. Clean pre-treatment of the surface is important (degreasing, removing oxide). To avoid distortion or cracks, stress-relief annealing and controlled cooling after welding are advisable. Compared with other high-strength aluminium alloys, EN AW-6082 is considerably less complicated in joining technology.
Anodising: The alloy can be anodised with a uniform, firmly adhering oxide layer. This is suitable both for decorative applications (silver, black) and for technical protective layers in corrosive environments. Pre-treatment by chemical pickling ensures particularly uniform results.
Delivery forms, designations and standards
Aluminium EN AW-6082 is available commercially in various semi-finished products. These include:
- Sheets (cast or rolled)
- Bars, tubes and profiles (standard and made to measure)
Standard designations and synonyms:
- EN AW-6082
- AlMgSi1
- Material number 3.2315
- Variants: T4 (soft), T6 (hardened), F (bright)
Depending on the manufacturer, the surface can be supplied raw, ground, anodised or film-coated. CNC cut pieces are available exactly to length and area dimensions. Anodised or powder-coated variants are also available on request – particularly for outdoor applications.
When is EN AW-6082 the optimal choice?
Anyone looking for a balanced combination of strength, machinability and corrosion protection makes a safe decision with EN AW-6082. The material is suitable for load-bearing structures, robust assemblies and dynamically stressed components – while at the same time being easy to process.
Compared with softer alloys, 6082 offers more design freedom while remaining economical – both in purchasing and in machine running. Designers who want to rely on a robust, well-documented and widely available aluminium alloy will find in EN AW-6082 a proven partner for industrial practice.
