Surface roughness tester
A roughness measuring device, also known as a stylus instrument, is an instrument for the precise measurement of surface roughness. It records the fine structure and unevenness of material surfaces in order to determine their roughness quantitatively. This is done by tactile scanning, in which a fine stylus tip is guided over the surface.
In doing so, the device registers the height differences of the surface and converts them into electrical signals. These signals are then evaluated in order to calculate parameters such as Ra (arithmetic mean roughness) and Rz (ten-point height difference). These measurements are crucial for quality assurance and optimisation in the manufacturing industry, since the surface condition influences the functionality and durability of components.
