Conformal cooling
Even with short cycle times, cooling channels in injection moulds and extrusion dies can enable a spontaneous temperature change of up to 70 °C by being placed extremely close to the mould contour. This method, known as "contour-following cooling", is of particular interest for various applications:
- Production of thick-walled injection-moulded parts and extrusion profiles: By placing the cooling channels close to the mould contour, thick-walled parts and profiles can be cooled more efficiently, resulting in improved shaping and less distortion.
- Processing of high-performance plastics: High-performance plastics often require precise temperature control during the moulding process to ensure optimum mechanical properties. Contour-following cooling enables more precise temperature control, resulting in better quality of the end products.
- Complex moulded parts with large differences in wall thickness: When producing moulded parts with widely varying wall thicknesses, uniform cooling is crucial in order to avoid distortion and defects. Placing cooling channels close to the contours enables targeted cooling where it is needed most.
Targeted cooling not only reduces the cycle time, but also increases the efficiency of the process and improves product quality. This method thus contributes to increasing production rationalisation.
