Everything about aluminium EN AW-1050A: chemical composition, mechanical values, typical applications and differences from others.
What is Aluminium EN AW-1050A?
Aluminium EN AW-1050A is a wrought pure aluminium alloy with a purity of at least 99.5%. It is one of the unalloyed aluminium materials (EN 573-3, material number 3.0255) and stands out in particular for its high electrical conductivity, pronounced corrosion resistance and very good reflectivity. The material is preferably used in applications where mechanical strength plays only a subordinate role.
Chemical composition of the alloy
The chemical composition of EN AW-1050A is strictly regulated and is based on a very high aluminium content. The remainder consists of controlled amounts of accompanying elements such as iron, silicon, copper, zinc, manganese and magnesium. This purity is the basis for the specific physical properties of the material. In particular, the high conductivity and corrosion resistance are a direct result of the high aluminium content.
Mechanical properties of EN AW-1050A
As a soft pure aluminium, EN AW-1050A shows only low mechanical strengths. Depending on the delivery condition, the tensile strength is between 60 and 110 MPa, and the yield strength is around 20 to 40 MPa. Despite the low strength, the material scores with an exceptionally high elongation at break of up to 40% and a typical hardness of around 20 HB. With a density of 2.71 g/cm³, the material is very light and therefore offers advantages in lightweight construction. Particularly noteworthy is the excellent cold formability, which predestines EN AW-1050A for bending, drawing and embossing processes.
Typical applications in industry
The fields of application of EN AW-1050A are diverse. In electrical engineering, the alloy is frequently used for busbars and other conductive components due to its high conductivity. In the field of lighting technology, it serves as the starting material for reflectors, as it offers very good light reflection. EN AW-1050A is also often found in architecture for façade cladding and covers, because it is both corrosion-resistant and decorative. Further fields of application are chemical apparatus (not pressure-loaded), packaging with food contact as well as signs, decorative sheets and plaques.
Advantages and limits of the alloy
Aluminium EN AW-1050A offers a whole range of advantages that make it a popular material in various industrial sectors:
- Very good corrosion resistance in many environments
- Excellent electrical and thermal conductivity
- High formability and suitability for drawing and bending processes
- Good suitability for optical applications thanks to high reflective power
- Approved for food contact in suitable quality
Despite these merits, EN AW-1050A is not suitable for all applications. The very low strength makes use in load-bearing or heavily stressed components problematic. In addition, the material can only be machined to a limited extent and cannot be hardened by heat treatment. Suitable processes must also be observed when welding due to the composition.
Machinability and further processing
The processing properties of EN AW-1050A depend on the process used. Formability at room temperature is excellent – in particular for drawing, deep drawing and bending processes. Machining, on the other hand, is only possible to a limited extent, as the material tends to form smeary chips and requires special tools. Welding is possible with processes such as MIG or TIG, but should only be used with low mechanical load. With regard to surface treatment, the alloy can be very well anodised, polished or painted, which also predestines it for decorative applications.
Comparison with similar aluminium alloys
A direct comparison with other common aluminium alloys shows the strengths and weaknesses of EN AW-1050A in the context of industrial application:
| Alloy | Purity | Strength | Corrosion resist. | Conductivity | Price level |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| EN AW-1050A | high | low | very good | very high | favourable |
| EN AW-5754 | medium | medium | very good | medium | medium |
| EN AW-6082 | low | high | good | low | higher |
While EN AW-1050A scores with its purity and conductivity, alloys such as EN AW-5754 offer better mechanical load capacity combined with good corrosion resistance. EN AW-6082 makes sense when high strengths are the priority and conductivity plays a subordinate role.
Available semi-finished products & delivery forms
The material EN AW-1050A is available in numerous semi-finished products. The selection ranges from sheets and plates to foils and coils through to special formats for further processing. Anodised versions are also available on the market. Bars and profiles are rarer, but available on request. The good availability in different thicknesses and surface qualities makes the material particularly flexible in use.
Standards & approvals for EN AW-1050A
The alloy is subject to various standards that regulate its composition, mechanical properties and delivery forms. EN 573-3 defines the chemical composition, while EN 485-2 specifies mechanical characteristic values for sheets, coils and plates. The European designation system EN 602 and the international standard ISO/TS 15510 enable unambiguous classification. For certain fields of application – for example in the food sector – additional certificates are required.
Conclusion: When is EN AW-1050A the right choice?
EN AW-1050A is the first choice for applications where electrical conductivity, corrosion resistance and optical quality are the priority. The material is suitable for light, non-load-bearing components that should be readily formable and decorative. Particularly in electrical engineering, architecture and in reflective or food-related applications, it offers convincing advantages.
- Ideal for electrically conductive and corrosion-resistant components
- Suitable for drawing, bending and forming processes with low load
- Not for mechanically heavily stressed or load-bearing constructions
