Everything about EN AW-5083: aluminium alloy with high strength, corrosion resistance & excellent weldability.
Material profile: EN AW-5083 at a glance
Aluminium AlMg4.5Mn, also known under the material designation EN AW-5083, is an alloy from the 5000 series. It is one of the non-heat-treatable aluminium alloys with a high proportion of magnesium (about 4–5 %) and a small addition of manganese. This combination gives the material excellent corrosion resistance, particularly in saline or humid environments.
The material is a prime example of the balance between high strength, good formability and excellent seawater resistance. Especially in the maritime industry, in vehicle construction and in chemical apparatus engineering, EN AW-5083 is the preferred choice. In addition to its good weldability, it impresses with a uniform microstructure that ensures consistent quality even in large-format sheets and plates.
Mechanical properties & strength
A decisive advantage of EN AW-5083 is its high mechanical load-bearing capacity without prior heat treatment. Since the material is not heat-treatable, its strength is based primarily on cold working. Typical mechanical values in the frequently used temper H111 (half-hard, cold-worked) are:
- Tensile strength (Rm): 270–350 MPa
- Yield strength (Rp0.2): 130–280 MPa
- Elongation at break: 10–16 %
These values may vary slightly depending on the form of delivery, thickness and selected temper. Tempers such as H321 or H116 are additionally stabilised in order to achieve even higher resistance to intergranular corrosion.
Another plus point: the mechanical properties remain stable even at low temperatures, which makes EN AW-5083 a suitable material for cryogenic applications – e.g. in liquefied gas tanks or for the storage of deeply cooled media.
Corrosion behaviour and weather resistance
In direct comparison with other aluminium alloys, EN AW-5083 is one of the most corrosion-resistant representatives. This applies in particular to seawater, saline air, industrial atmospheres and many chemical media.
The high corrosion resistance results from the high magnesium content and a homogeneous microstructure that promotes the formation of a stable oxide layer. This reliably protects the material even in the event of mechanical damage. The material is resistant to stress corrosion cracking and shows no significant deterioration in its corrosion resistance even in the welded condition.
For applications in coastal areas, on offshore platforms or in the construction of tanks for aggressive liquids, EN AW-5083 is therefore ideally suited.
Weldability and machinability in comparison
Another plus point of the alloy is its excellent weldability. Both MIG and TIG welding processes deliver reliable results with minimal distortion and good seam quality. This results in low strength losses in the heat-affected zone (HAZ), which preserves structural integrity.
Filler materials such as AlMg4.5MnZ (e.g. welding wire 5183) are preferably suitable for welding, as they offer good adaptation to the base properties.
Machinability, on the other hand, is limited – as with many aluminium alloys with a high magnesium content. Material build-up on the tools can occur, particularly with insufficient cooling. Special tools with adapted geometry as well as suitable lubricating and cooling emulsions help here.
Compared with the heat-treatable alloy EN AW-6082, 5083 shows better weldability, but somewhat lower suitability for machining. The choice of material therefore depends strongly on the machining process and the required final properties.
Typical areas of application in industry & technology
The strengths of EN AW-5083 come into play wherever high corrosion resistance, good mechanical properties and weldability are required. Typical areas of application are:
- Shipbuilding: construction of hulls, superstructures, decks and bulkheads – particularly in the area of commercial shipping, yachts and ferries
- Vehicle construction: manufacture of superstructures for trucks and trailers, tank vehicles, transport containers as well as components for rail vehicles
- Chemical apparatus engineering: construction of vessels, pipelines, heat exchangers and other components with contact to aggressive media
- Energy and environmental technology: e.g. in offshore wind farms, water treatment plants or energy tanks
- Cryogenics: storage and transport containers for deeply cold liquids such as LNG
The material is also used in the architectural sector, for example for façade elements near the sea or for load-bearing aluminium structures, due to its durability and weather resistance.
Differences from similar alloys (e.g. AW-5754, AW-6082)
In everyday industrial practice, the question often arises as to which aluminium alloy is optimally suited for a particular project. EN AW-5083 is particularly often compared with AW-5754 and AW-6082.
Compared with AW-5754:
- Higher strength with comparable formability
- Significantly better corrosion resistance, particularly against seawater
- Better suited for load-bearing structures and mechanically stressed components
Compared with AW-6082:
- Better weldability
- Lower tendency to cracking in weld seams
- Somewhat lower strength, but better resistance to corrosion in saline environments
In practice, the choice between these materials is usually based on the requirement profile for mechanical properties, machinability and environmental influences.
Standards, forms of delivery & availability
EN AW-5083 is standardised in Europe according to EN 573 (chemical composition), EN 485 (strip, sheet, plate) and EN 1386 (forged parts). The material is available in the following tempers:
- H111: lightly cold-worked, standard for many applications
- H321: stabilised, high corrosion resistance
- H116: seawater-resistant, specially certified for shipbuilding
Typical forms of delivery are:
- Sheets in thicknesses from 1 mm to over 50 mm
- Plates for milling and cut-to-size applications
- Discs for rotationally symmetrical components
- Cut pieces to measure for custom-made products
Availability is very good – both in trade and from specialised metal cut-to-size portals. Due to its wide range of applications, EN AW-5083 is a common standard material.
Conclusion: when is AlMg4.5Mn the right choice?
If your application requires high corrosion resistance, good mechanical values and simple processing, EN AW-5083 is the ideal choice. Whether in shipbuilding, apparatus engineering or mobile tank systems – the alloy offers a robust and durable solution.
Particularly in contact with seawater, chemically aggressive media or changing external influences, the material delivers reliable results. In combination with good weldability and the numerous available forms of delivery, AlMg4.5Mn is a versatile all-rounder for demanding technical environments.
