Roller
A roller is a cylindrical or profiled solid body that is used as a tool in various industrial sectors, in particular for forming materials such as plastics. For example, it is often found in the calender, a machine for producing thin films or sheets.
These rollers can have different functions, depending on their specific task in the manufacturing process. A general distinction is made between work rollers and backing rollers. Work rollers are directly involved in the forming process and come into contact with the material, while backing rollers serve to support the process and ensure uniform material guidance.
Work rollers can have various profiles, depending on the requirements of the production process. They can be smooth or have special patterns or grooves that bring the material into a specific shape or give it a specific surface structure. Backing rollers, by contrast, are often smooth and serve mainly to guide the material and maintain the required tension.
The design and material selection of the rollers depend heavily on the specific requirements of the respective application. They must be robust enough to withstand the loads of the production process and at the same time precise enough to achieve the desired results.
