Heat capacity
Heat capacity is a fundamental concept in thermodynamics that helps us understand how materials respond to thermal energy. It characterises the ability of a body to absorb and store heat and is therefore of crucial importance for many aspects of heat transfer and heat storage. In simple terms, heat capacity describes how much heat a material can absorb before its temperature changes.
A plastic body, for example, can absorb a certain amount of thermal energy before its temperature rises or falls. This ability to absorb and retain heat influences its performance in various applications, from insulation in buildings to the manufacture of cooling containers.
Knowledge of a material's heat capacity is therefore of great importance to engineers and scientists working on the development and optimisation of various products and systems in which heat plays an important role.
