Distortion occurs when a workpiece changes its original shape due to one-sided or uneven loads. This change can have various causes, from mechanical stress to temperature fluctuations or even material defects.
If a workpiece is subjected to uneven loads, this can cause certain areas to experience more stress than others, which in turn leads to deformation. This deformation can manifest in various forms, such as bending, twisting or shortening/lengthening in certain areas of the workpiece.
Distortion can impair the functionality of the workpiece and in some cases even render it unusable, particularly in the case of precisely manufactured parts where dimensional accuracy is crucial. It is therefore important to take distortion into account during the manufacturing process and to take suitable measures to minimise or avoid it.
