Structural Reaction Injection Moulding

Structural Reaction Injection Moulding (SRIM) represents an advanced variant of the conventional Reaction Injection Moulding (RIM) process. This technique combines the proven principles of RIM with additional reinforcements to improve the mechanical properties of the end products.

The SRIM process begins with reinforcement mats, such as those made of glass fibres, being placed in the mould. These reinforcements play a decisive role, as they are embedded in the plastic during the curing process. Once the mats are positioned, the liquid reaction mixture, consisting of two reactive components (polyol and isocyanate), is injected into the mould.

Inside the mould, the chemical reactions begin, leading to polymerisation, with the mixture flowing through the reinforcement mats and completely enclosing them. This process results in a solid composite material in which the embedded glass fibre mats contribute considerably to improving the mechanical properties. The resulting plastic parts exhibit increased strength, stiffness and durability, which makes them particularly suitable for applications that require high structural integrity.
