Sonotrode
The sonotrode, also known as a welding horn, plays a decisive role in ultrasonic welding, a highly precise joining process. Its function is to transmit the ultrasonic energy from a converter to the material to be welded. This transmission takes place through high-frequency vibrations generated by the sonotrode. Due to the continuous load from these ultrasonic vibrations, the requirements placed on the material of the sonotrode are extremely demanding.
Titanium is typically used for the manufacture of sonotrodes, as it is ideally suited due to its mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. To further improve durability and performance, the surface of the sonotrode is often provided with a carbide coating.
This coating increases wear resistance and thus extends the service life of the sonotrode, which in turn improves the efficiency and quality of the welding process. The selection of the right material and the optimisation of the coating therefore play a decisive role in the performance and reliability of the sonotrode in ultrasonic welding.
