Tensile strength perpendicular to grain
Transverse tensile strength refers to the tensile strength of a material in the direction transverse to the main surface extension. This is particularly relevant in composite constructions, such as laminated sheets consisting of several layers.
In such constructions, the transverse tensile strength is tested in order to assess the load-bearing capacity and stability of the material under tensile forces acting perpendicular to the surface. Another area of application for transverse tensile strength is in monosandwich injection moulding and in multi-component injection moulding, where plastic parts are produced by injecting different materials or layers into a mould.
Here it is important that the materials have sufficient strength not only in the main direction but also transverse to it, in order to meet the specific requirements and stresses in use.
