Polyphenylene sulphide
Polyphenylene sulphide (PPS) is used in practice mainly as a glass-fibre-reinforced engineering plastic. In this form it presents itself as an extremely rigid high-performance material that offers a wide range of properties in the high-performance range. For example:
- High strength, even at high temperatures: PPS retains its structural integrity even under extreme temperature conditions, which makes it ideal for applications exposed to high loads.
- High dimensional stability: The dimensions of PPS components remain stable and unchanged, even under changing environmental conditions or mechanical load.
- High temperature resistance: PPS can withstand high temperatures without impairing its mechanical properties, which makes it suitable for applications in hot environments.
- Good electrical properties: PPS exhibits excellent electrical insulating properties and is therefore in demand in many electrical applications.
- High chemical resistance: It is resistant to a wide range of chemicals, which makes it attractive for applications in aggressive environments where other materials could fail.
- Low interfacial diffusion: PPS shows a low tendency towards diffusion of substances at its surface, which increases its stability and resistance to foreign substances.
- Flame-retardant: PPS is flame-retardant, which improves its safety in potentially fire-prone environments. However, due to its structure it tends towards brittle fracture behaviour, which must be taken into account in design and use.
