Flame retardancy
Flame retardancy in plastics means that they do not burn under extreme heat and contact with oxygen. A high oxygen index and a high ignition temperature make plastics flame-retardant.
This prevents electrical device housings from igniting in the event of short circuits. Even if a fire breaks out, a high oxygen index prevents it from spreading. UL 94 classifies the burning behaviour of plastics into various categories.
