Dielectric strength
The dielectric strength of a material is its ability to withstand high voltage, particularly in the case of insulating materials. This important characteristic value is defined as the quotient of the applied voltage and the thickness of the test specimen, usually measured in kilovolts per millimetre (kV/mm).
It is a measure of how well a material insulates electrical charge and prevents current from flowing through it when it is exposed to high voltages. This property is crucial for the safety and performance of electrical systems and devices. A higher dielectric strength value indicates better insulating capability, which in turn reduces the risk of electrical breakdowns and short circuits.
