DIN 8580
DIN 8580 is a standard that establishes clear terminology for the various manufacturing processes in order to ensure a uniform understanding in industry. This standard divides manufacturing processes into six main groups, each covering different aspects of production:
- Creating cohesion by primary shaping: In this process, materials are brought into a specific shape, often by casting or forging, in order to create a basic structure.
- Maintaining cohesion by forming: Here, materials are brought into a new shape while their integrity and structure are maintained. Examples include bending, drawing or rolling metals.
- Reducing cohesion by separating: This process involves cutting off parts or materials in order to obtain specific shapes or sizes. Typical methods are cutting, sawing or punching.
- Increasing cohesion by joining: In this process, separate parts or materials are connected to one another to create a solid unit. This can be done by welding, adhesive bonding, soldering or other methods.
- Changing material properties: Here, the properties of a material are specifically changed, for example by heat treatment or conditioning. This allows hardness, strength or other characteristics to be adjusted in order to meet the requirements of the application.
